Or you might invite your friends to join you in these places as a way to encourage sober activities. The Benefits of Spending Time Alone Develop a Couple of Go-To Responses Obviously, you aren’t likely to avoid alcohol all the time. Weddings, shows, and even art galleries, usually serve alcohol. And of course, your friends may want to go to bars, clubs, or other events, where alcohol is one of the main attractions. So it’s important to develop some go-to responses ahead of time for how you’ll handle questions about why you’re not drinking. Or you may want a response for how you’ll politely turn down an offer to buy you a drink. Depending on the person asking, you might decide to offer a direct, truthful response. Here are some options: “I decided to stop drinking for a while.”“I’m not interested in drinking tonight.”“I gave up alcohol.”“I’m cutting back on my drinking.”“I’m not going to drink for a while.”“I’m sober curious.”“I’m driving tonight, so I’m not drinking.”“I took a break from drinking, and I love the way I feel now. So I don’t plan to start again any time soon.” If you’re comfortable lying (some people are, others aren’t), and you need a quick reason to explain your sobriety to an acquaintance, you might say something like: “I just had a drink, but thank you anyway.”“I’m still recovering from Thursday night, so I am giving my liver a break tonight.”“I promised my fitness trainer I’d give up alcohol for a while.”“I have a medical problem that makes it so I can’t drink.”“I’m taking medication right now that can’t be mixed with alcohol.”“I’m on a new diet that doesn’t include alcohol.” You might also find it’s helpful to add a little humor to the response. You might say that you’re training for a marathon (when it’s clear that you’re not) or that you’re taking a drug test in the morning (which is only funny if it’s not true). Of course, you don’t need to explain yourself. A simple, “I’m drinking seltzer tonight,” is enough. But if you know your friends are likely to give you a hard time, or you know that you’re going to run into people who are going to insist you drink, having a few canned responses ready to go can prevent you from being taken off guard. Have a Conversation with Your Friends It’s up to you to decide how much information to share and who to share the information with. You certainly don’t have to justify your decision. Some people drink, and some people don’t. Everyone has their own choice to make, and no explanation is needed. If you have good friends who are likely to support your efforts, you might decide to have a direct and honest conversation with them. Tell them that you plan to avoid alcohol or that you’re cutting back. Let them know what they can do to help. Perhaps you’d appreciate someone else staying sober with you when you go out. Or maybe you’d still like to hang out together, but only not in bars. You might even still like to do the same thingsâ€"such as playing cards or watching movies togetherâ€"but you’re hoping to do so without alcohol being served sometimes. Hopefully, some of your friends will support your decision. In fact, some of them might also be thinking about cutting back on their own alcohol use and be inspired by you. Yet others might not understand or may even discourage you from doing it. So be prepared for a variety of responses, as alcohol can stir up some strong feelings for people. Have a Non-Alcoholic Drink on Hand It’s helpful to have something in your hand at all times. So if you go to a place that serves alcohol, maybe you can immediately order a non-alcoholic drink. If you go to someone’s home, bring your own drink. Whether you have bottled water or a protein shake with you, keeping a drink in your hand can prevent people from offering you alcohol. It’ll also help you decline more easily if you are offered a drink, because you can say, “No thanks, I already have one.” Have Fun You might find that people will accuse you of being “boring” or a “buzzkill” when you’re not drinking and they are. So when you walk into a situation believing that you can’t have fun sober, this is likely to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. You might even isolate yourself or hold back from having a good timeâ€"which will then reinforce your belief (and everyone else’s) that being sober makes fun impossible. So enter into the situation with a positive attitude, and make the best of your time, even if you’re the only one not drinking. You might actually find that being sober is more enjoyable than you predicted. Have a Reason to Bail Early If you go out with people who are drinking and you’re not having fun, or you’re really tempted to drink yourself, then maybe you should bail early. This is especially important if you’re going somewhere where you used to always drink before. Walking into the same old bar or the same nightclub you used to frequent may trigger thoughts of wanting to drink again. You can either just leave or say you have to go without offering a reason why. But you might find it’s more helpful if you offer a reason. Plan ahead, and think of a reason you could offer for leaving early. Whether you say you have to get up early for an event, or you say you have to meet someone else, a fast excuse to get out of the situation can be helpful. Do Something Productive the Morning After You might find that one of the best parts about not drinking is that you don’t waste away the next morning sleeping and feeling hungover. So make the most of the time you gain by doing something enjoyable or productive. Go for a jog, clean the house, or run errands. Then, take the rest of your day to enjoy your time. Having more time and energy might motivate you to continue abstaining from alcohol. Years ago, a group of Japanese young people started hanging out at the Harajuku district. These trendsetting youth go there with their unexplainable fashion sense (Bartlett). The Harajuku fashion is just really so different because anything can be possible (Craft 26) and it is all about â€Å"creativity, theatricality, style, confidence, looking cute, and mixing and matching† (Knight). The trendsetting youth had changed a normal neighborhood into a fashion capital (Johnson 14) and it has been said to be in the same class as the 1920s of Paris. It has been well known that even though the district changed its name into Jingu-Mae, it is still known as Harajuku (Kubo 38). Harajuku has truly been recognized worldwide and outsiders tend to draw their own conclusions about it. Some people think badly of Harajuku, while others simply do not fully grasp the real concept of it. People who do not really understand the concept tend to make up their own explanations or tend to do things that they think are good but are actually not. Taking a deeper look into their culture can lead us to better decipher that it is all about the youth expressing themselves and somewhat escaping from reality. The youth go to Harajuku during the weekends wearing their own unique ensembles. They might seem like they just randomly put things on but they actually follow certain rules and guidelines. They have a sense of order (Kubo 39). â€Å"Japan is a place where everyone is individual – but in groups† (Knight). Their outfits greatly vary from all the kinds of getups that they have created. Included in these are â€Å"cyber-punk, Lolita fashion [inspired by the Victorian era], kawaii [cute], punk, ganguro [symbolizes a California girl with bleached hair, dark skin, fake eyelashes, and nails], cosplay [most common name for â€Å"costume players† or those who dress up like Japanes animated characters], hiphop, skater and visual-kei [style of bands]† (Rockers). Their clothing can vary from shades of black to shades of bright colors and from plain fabrics to all kinds of different prints. They also change their hairstyles and hair color and they also put on makeup. They truly aimed to look different from the rest in their attempt to fit in with the others (Mah). Because of how some of the youth dress up, outsiders think of the Harajuku youth as rebellious delinquents (Kubo 41). Since some of their outfits tend to be out of this world, some people are inclined to compare them to the London punks who loafed around at Trafalgar Square. The thing is that these London punks are these young people who act the way they dress. They can be aloof, disrespectful, irresponsible and such, which does not really give justice to the Harajuku youth (Knight). Also, the way the singer, Gwen Stefani, introduced the Harajuku Girls in Hollywood led others to think of the original ones as â€Å"rebellious, underground, subversive, and rule-breaking† kinds of youth (Kubo 41). It has also been said that the youth are â€Å"devoid of perseverance, dependent upon others, and self-centered† (Cho). â€Å"Everyone imposes their own interpretation on the Harajuku girls – sees them through their tinted lenses† (Kubo 41). In contrary to what outsiders may think, the Harajuku youth are kind, respectful and accommodating towards other people (Kubo). They undergo complete transformations when they go there. However, their looks do not dictate the way they act. They are actually nice and considerate, even though they are wearing their somewhat unconventional getups (Harden). The Japanese youth are clean and responsible. Their clothes do not define their attitudes as they can simply take off these getups that they put on (Knight). They might also seem antisocial, but they are actually easy to approach (Kubo). The so-called Tokyo punks are well behaved, having their pictures taken with visitors and most of them, if not all, do not have vises like smoking or such that the London punks have (Mead). Also, they are quite considerate towards other people. In Harden’s article, the youth that he mentioned there were careful so that they do not displease other people who ride the train with them or people they are with when they commute. Because of Harajuku’s popularity, others are starting to use its name in wrong ways. A very controversial and probably well-known example of this would be Gwen Stefani’s Harajuku Girls. â€Å"She’s taken Tokyo hipsters, sucked them [Harajuku grils] dry of all their street cred, and turned them into China dolls. she’s swallowed a subversive youth culture in Japan and barfed up another image of submissive giggling Asian women. While aping a style that’s suppose to be about individuality and personal expression, Stefani ends up being the only one who stands out† (Ahn). A photographer, Van Meene, also produced photographs that showed a â€Å"sexualized image of schoolgirls,† which is contrary to the sweet, adorable or cute look that some of them portray (Ahn). A lot of companies produce only small quantities of their products so that their merchandise would be seen as unique or some limited edition item that most people want. Some merchandise can become very expensive one day and cheaper a few days later. â€Å"These outfits are†¦an expression of an authentic Japanese experience† (Mead). What people like and dislike can change really quickly, which can cause stores to close down (Fulford). Brands or labels do not dominate the market of the Japanese youth, but rather, the youth controls what stores should put out and sell (Knight). One thing that probably induced the youth to dress up so differently was the uniforms they wore – they needed an escape from it all. They acquired a tendency to want to step out of the box. â€Å"Parading after hours in Harajuku is an antidote to the straitjacket conventions of weekday life. † This is like a way of showing that they can be distinct from all the others. The Japanese are more of traditionalists and they are quite strict about rules and order (Craft 26). They break free from this by going out to Harajuku and dressing the way they wanted to. They can wear anything they want and it can be anything at all. This makes it a little difficult to quite say what exactly they do there (Bartlett). They can mix all kinds of different things and make it look good (Ahn). They can look however they want to and it can be different every time. â€Å"Harajuku is perhaps the one place on Earth where every day is like Halloween† (Craft 26). â€Å"Harajuku had become a place to be seen, not a place to live in† where mostly young people flock to during the weekends (Johnson). During the weekends, they put on these getups that would seem absurd to some people, but they return to their normal lives when they leave (Johnson). They wear normal clothes and live normal lives throughout the weekdays. They can be set apart from the way they dress during the weekends and the way they dress during the rest of the week (Knight). They go to school and help around the house. This is a factor why the youth do not become irresponsible delinquents. Some parents allow them to dress up any way they wanted, but they were not allowed to wear it around the neighborhood (Kubo 40). The Harajuku fashion is merely for looks and pleasure. â€Å"The Japanese are fanatical about fashion in the way that the Brazilians are about soccer or the Germans are about cleanliness† (Mead). They can mix all kinds of different things and make it look good (Ahn). They feel delighted when other people take pleasure in what they are wearing. The youth, who actively participate with the gathering in the Harajuku district every weekend, sometimes commute for really long hours just to get there. They do not even mind waking up and traveling so long just to go to Harajuku. They feel a form of sensation from all the other people who look at them and admire their own styles (Harden). The real Harajuku girls were thought of as mere rebellious delinquents, while all they really want to do is make a difference. They simply like the feeling of dressing up and having other people admire them (Kubo). â€Å"This is what Japanese teenagers do for fun† (Mead). This sort of thing happens to millions of people on a regular basis. Americans of African, Asian, or Mexican descent are all subject to this kind of treatment. Caucasians are as well, but it is not as publicly notarized as the aforementioned. Most of these feelings towards another of a different skin color are deeply rooted in our minds from previous generations. Many, many years ago, African-Americans were used as slaves. The slave owners treated them badly. The owner's own children then grew up with the same ideals and passed them on to the new generation. Through the years, people have spoke out about these ill-conceived ideas making the ominous threat of racism more discreet than ever before. While in a search online, I discovered a numbered list of Klu Klux Klan, Aryan, Skinhead, and many other white supremacist groups. I was shocked when I saw how many this one list had. It listed over 800 different groups. I know that number is not nearly accurate because there are many smaller groups that have not yet made themselves known publicly. Even people that do not belong in these racially biased groups perform some acts of racism. Racial profiling- the discriminatory practice by police of treating blackness (or brown-ness) as an indication of possible criminality. "Driving While Black (or brown)" is a campaign started by the American Civil Liberties Union because a study showed that minorities only make up 16% of all drivers, yet they are 74% of all drivers stopped and searched. Generally, only 12 to 13 percent of the U.S. citizens are African American, although Black inmates make up 40.29 percent of death row's population. As of 1996, there have been 232 citizens executed under the death penalty since 1977. Only one white person has been put to death for the murder of a black person. One perfect example of true racial profiling and discrimination is this next story. Danny Glover, a famous African-American actor, was in New York City. It was late at night and he was trying to hail a cab. None of the cabs would stop and pick him up because of the fact that he was an African-American male. Stereotypical views like those of the cabby's are not rare. When a black person does not wear baggy jeans or say slang phrases such as, "Yo homie, sup", people would often describe that particular person as being too "white". Similarly, if a white person plays basketball or listens to rap music, we might think of him or her as being too "black". All because of the stereotypical views implanted by the media and our ancestors in our brains. Movies, music, and yes, even Looney Tunes?, all put these ideas in our heads. Movies with the constant violence committed by minorities against whites are ridiculous. As aforementioned, Looney Tunes? also bring these ideals into the heart of our youth. You wake up early on a Saturday morning to watch you favorite cartoon. When it comes on you gasp in horror as a Hillbilly tickles one of the "Natives" until he backs off a cliff, plummeting hundreds of feet to his death. Have you ever noticed how all of the Chinese characters have slanted eyes, buckteeth, and were accompanied by a ringing gong in the background? I have. Then there's little Sambo, he was one of the few African-American characters on Looney Tunes. He was absolutely adorable but incredibly half-witted. I believe all of this is absolutely ridiculous. Nobody should be putting these ideas into anyone's head. Doctors today seem to just write out prescriptions for these instant, magical fixes, without even attempting to look deeper to find the root of the childs behavioral problems. These pills arent even safe, they come with serious side effects. Ritalin, which comes from the same family as cocaine, is said to cause appetite loss, anxiety, insomnia, tics, headaches, and stomach aches. It also only lasts 4 hours, for a temporary but quick fix. (Ullman, 1996, p. 42) There are so many better, longer lasting, safe, and cost efficient solutions to cope with ADD, other than medication. I know it can be done, because I for one, was a child with ADD. I have learned to cope with the disorder naturally all on my own. I was never diagnosed as a child, but I definitely had it because I could not concentrate, I never listened to directions, I never read any of the assigned books or readings because I could not sit still and concentrate. Stay away from high sugar/caffeine energy drinks as well because they’ll typically cause you to crash. What if you crash during the test and pass out, drooling on your test? It’s not a good idea to consume this stuff when you need to be on your game. 5. Avoid Perfectionism You can actually take things too seriously and cause yourself to draw a big fat blank during the test! Perfectionism is creepy and it causes heart attacks dude. Yes, A’s are awesome. We all know that, but keep things in perspective please. B’s and C’s get degrees as well. Do your best of course, but don’t have a stroke in the process. 6. Call Mom or Dad In other words, if you’re feeling super-stressed out just call someone that cares about you and have a chat. Let it out! Talk to someone older that’s been through it. Talk to your professor. Talk to someone that understands. Conversation can be a HUGE stress reliever and it gives you a chance to verbalize what you’ve been neck-deep in for a while. 7. Keep Negativity In Check Depression and anxiety are rampant on modern college campuses today. Exercise and proper nutrition are going to work wonders, along with staying away from artificial stimulants. Furthermore, adequate sleep really helps as well. But, at the end of the day your attitude is going to be a pretty big indicator of how you’ll perform on a test. Keep your attitude confident and upbeat and you’ll do things you never imagined you could! 8. Don’t Study Alone Think of taking a big test like going into battle. No one wants to head out into the field of war alone. No one wants to face the hordes all by their lonesome. When you know that you’re taking tests with friends or study partners, it feels like a shared load. Studying in groups is genius. Really, it pays off in more ways than one. You meet people. You feel more relaxed during tests. The studying is typically better quality. The list goes on and on and it can really be a stress reliever. 9. Take Breaks This goes along with obsessive compulsive perfectionism. Don’t take things so seriously that you never disengage and give your psyche a break for a month before the test. If you’ve done your homework regularly, attended class, taken good notes and studied along the way you’ll do fine! Make sure to do other stuff. Go out and see a movie. Play some basketball. Go on a hike. Get your back waxed. Something! Yes, at the end of the day college can be reduced to a number of critical tests that determine whether you get a degree or not. That’s true. But exam stress doesn’t do you a whole lot of good. If you use it like an iron hot cattle prod behind you, propelling you to do the right thing, then that’s great! We already know that the body keeps to circadian rhythms which are a form of keeping time which helps us maintain our time awake and sleeping. Recent research into this area has shown that the right lateral frontal lobe and the superior medial regions of the frontal lobe are instrumental in the brains perception of time. In Kansas, he worked as a baker in a kitchen while he attended the High School. He paid for his schooling with the money he earned from winning bake-off contests. From there he moved all over bouncing from school to school. Which human characteristics could be represented by these qualities/ values? Candy is the oldest man on the ranch. As he is the oldest, he has more things to worry about than the others. He has only one hand and a women’s name, and through Steinbeck’s writing, we know why this is, because he has lost his masculinity and pride. He also has a pet extremely old pet dog, which he loves and everyone loathes, as they think it is useless and suffering, Candy thinks otherwise and doesn’t want it shot. Candy’s dog, which doesn’t have a name and is incredibly old in the story, represents the fact that things that are unimportant are unknown to other people. This represents Candy as an old undervalued character that is slowly loosing value like his dog. It establishes that if you’re an old animal, then you’re in trouble. This is why Candy is so reluctant to have his dog shot because he knows what its like to be old and unwanted, but because he and his dog share the same qualities, he feels like they are close friends that rely on each other. In the book, he says ‘I’m so used to him,’ he said softly. ‘I had him as a pup.’ This shows the closeness between the two. Candy can’t bear to imagine loosing something he has been so close to for most of his life on the ranch. And has he and the dog don’t have anyone but themselves, Candy feels that he will be completely alone after the dog dies. Because Candy doesn’t want the dog to die before him, he wants to savour what he has got left. Candy and the dog are both living on borrowed time, which means as soon as the boss finds out Candy is too old to work, he’ll throw him, and Candy won’t have anywhere to go. When Candy’s dog does get shot he feels instant regret. This is because he felt he should have shot the dog, and not Carlson. Candy feels that by not doing this, he has betrayed his dog and let him down. If anyone is supposed to take responsibility over anyone, it should be their best or closest friend. He wasn’t there to comfort the dog too, he feels guilt and is let down by his actions. Some one else that is in the same position as Candy and his dog are Lennie and George. George being the strongest to the two is very protective over Lennie. He makes a point of always telling what to do, but for his own good. People at the ranch criticize George on his choice of friendship, but this is because no one else seems to have a close companionship except them and Candy and his dog. They are jealous they don’t have the privilege to have someone to rely on. George and Lennie really do count on each other, as they are planning to get some money together and buy and farm so they can grow their own food and have animals. At the end of the book, when George kills Curley’s wife, he runs away just like George told him to and hides. When George finally finds him, he knows Lennie is going to be killed by an angry mob, so he takes the matter into his own hands. He speaks to Lennie about how they’re going to live, and about rabbits, as Lennie loves them so. This way he can kill Lennie without a sore consciousness and with Lennie truly happy. The only other couple in the story are Curley and his wife, who has no name in the book. This shows that women weren’t the same status like men, and also like Candy’s dog, she doesn’t really have any value to anyone’s life in the book, so she dies along with Lennie and the dog. Though she and Curley didn’t have a good relationship, he obviously cared for her, and went crazy when she was killed. Because it was Lennie who killed her, Curley felt like it was his responsibility to kill Lennie. Curley new what his wife’s nature was like, flirtatious and open. This would make the reader think that Curley was maybe jealous that it wasn’t him that killed her, but Lennie, who is seen as the ‘village idiot’. In this novel, I think Steinbeck was trying to tell us that if you have companionship throughout the toughest times of your life, don’t count on it, because one day the other person will let you down. He also wanted to show that whoever you take companionship with; you will have to take responsibility of their death. He wanted to show the readers that in a tough time, you can’t have someone to reply on all the time you have to be independent and strong.
